【Description】
National Museum of Natural Science contains six primary theme sections: Science Center, Space Theater, Life Science Hall, Chinese Science Hall, Earth Environment Hall, and Botanical Garden, which was opened in 1999. Below are brief introduction to each of them.
Science Center: It is composed of Science Exploration Section, IC Section, Astronomy and Meteorology Section, Material World, Pre-school Science Park, and Outdoor Activity Area.
Life Science Hall: It aims to focus on mystery of nature, including Mysterious World, Origin of Life, Botany Evolution, Landing Process of Life, Dinosaur Era, Conquering the Sky, Extinction, Evolution and Adaptation of Mammals, Stories about Humans, etc.
Chinese Science Hall: It is composed of the following six themes: Chinese Medicine, Chinese Science and Technologies, Chinese Agriculture, Ancient Chinese, the Mental Life of Chinese, South-Island People of Taiwan.
Earth Environment Hall: It contains three theaters: Eagle’s View, Environment, and Three-Dimension theaters; four theme sections: Micro-world Section, Assorted-Life Section, Ecosystem in Taiwan, and Mineral-Substance Section; 18 classrooms covering the following six themes: earthquake, underground treasures, sea, human beings and environment, conserving species, and materials and energy.
Botanical Garden: It occupies a land parcel of 4.9 hectares. It is composed of eight sections: Coral Reef, Lanyu, Beach Forests, Taitung Cycas, Low-altitude Areas: Northern, Central, Southern Taiwan, etc.
【Collection】
The collections of National Museum of Natural Science focus on zoology, botany, geology, and human specimens and cultural remains, in such form as photos, slides, videos, audios, paintings, archives, and field survey records. From mid-2003, live plants, and various kinds of specimens were also added to the above list. Up to end of 2003, there were more than 620,000 collections. The collection plan is still developing in terms of contents, way of collecting, and areas of collecting. The museum aims to become a national and international research center of natural and human science.
